The difference between SD, SDHC and SDXC, specifications and compatibility
Mobile devices today need some sort of a removable storage device for temporary or permanent storage of digital information. Secure Digital(SD) format has become a clear and undisputed leader in recent times and comprehensively overpowered older technologies like MMC (Multimedia Card). Secure digital memory cards can store data such as pictures, videos, music, or any other type of data. Many mobile devices such as camcorders, laptops, tablets, etc. support these types of memory cards. When it comes to the amount of data you can store the choice ranges between SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Let’s explore their capacities and compatibility:
SD(Secured Digital)
SD Memory cards are based on SDA 2.0 specifications
Typical Capacity Range- 128MB to 2 GB
Typical Format Type: FAT16
Compatibility: SD cards work on devices that support SD, SDHC or SDXC
SDHC (Secured Digital High Capacity)
SDHC Memory cards are based on SDA 2.0 specifications.
Typical Capacity Range- 4 GB to 32 GB
Typical Format Type: FAT32
Compatibility: SDHC format is not compatible with devices that only take SD cards as this technology is not backward compatible. Devices such as laptops, camcorders, and digital cameras built after 2008 are most likely to have SDHC readers.
SDHC host devices can use and support SD memory cards.
SDXC ( Secured Digital eXtended Capacity)
SDXC Memory cards are based on SDA 3.0 specifications.
Typical Capacity Range: 64 GB to 2 TB
Typical Format Type: exFAT
Note: exFAT file system is more suitable and efficient for high capacity SDXC cards and using this file system makes it not compatible backward with SD or SDHC technologies.
Compatibility: SDXC format is not compatible with devices that only take SD cards or host devices with only take SDHC cards as this technology is not backward compatible. Devices such as laptops, cam coders, and digital cameras built after 2010 are most likely to have SDXC readers. Host devices that support SDXC cards usually have an SDXC logo displayed on them and this way you can be sure that your host device is compatible with this technology
SDXC host devices can use and support SD & SDHC memory cards.
