Difference between Fluorescent and LED backlighting ?
There are two types of backlighting technologies available used by LCDs. Fluorescent is an old technology that uses a tube (fluorescent tube) connected to circuitry (voltage inverter board) which brings LCD screens to life. On the other hand, LED backlighting is a new technology that uses a matrix of LED for backlighting. Now let’s see the key differences between them:
Characteristics | Fluorescent backlighting | LED backlighting |
Technology | Old technology | New technology |
SIze | Heavy and thick | Light & thin |
Brightness | Low | Higher as compared to TN |
Power consumption | High power consumption High heat generation | Lower power consumption Lower heat generation |
Lifespan | Suffers from short life | Better lifespan as compared with fluorescent |
Colour Quality | Average | Better than TN |
LED backlight has become very popular because of its distinctive advantages over Fluorescent backlights. Most computers these days would use white LEDs also known as WLED’s. Another variant to this technology is RGB LED which is capable of emitting red, green, and blue light but is more expensive than white LED. RGB LED technology provides accurate colors as compared with WLED.
